Tuzigoot National Monument: A Cultural Gem in the Heart of Arizona

Tuzigoot National Monument is a must-visit attraction for anyone traveling to Clarkdale, Arizona.

I was immediately drawn to the site’s rich history and cultural significance.

The monument is the site of a hilltop pueblo just outside Cottonwood, and it was a short trip from Sedona where I was staying for the week.

Although there were little or no signs from the highway pointing the way there, relying on my GPS helped me find the location with ease.

Why You Should Visit Tuzigoot National Monument, Clarkdale

The Tuzigoot National Monument is a cultural gem and an important historical landmark of Arizona.

It offers visitors a glimpse into the lives of Native Americans who lived in the Verde River Valley over 1,000 years ago.

The site consists of approximately 110 rooms built on the top of a hill, which would have provided defense from all directions.

The monument is a testament to the ingenuity of the early settlers and their remarkable ability to thrive in the region for 300 years (1000-1300AD), which is longer than the US has been in existence.

What To Do in Tuzigoot National Monument, Clarkdale

Upon arrival, I paid the entrance fee of $10/person, which also entitled me to access to Montezuma Castle for the week.

The interpretive center has a number of exhibits explaining how the community came into being, how it grew in size, and the nature of the archeological artifacts found there.

The visitor center building does an excellent job of explaining the history of the location and showing recovered artifacts and telling what it took to explore the site and preserve it.

I also purchased a few cool postcards and souvenirs to support the good work of the National Parks Service.

The ruins are a short walk from the parking lot, and the views from the site are breathtaking.

Walking the trail to see its restored rooms was very awesome.

Although access to the top of the lookout was closed due to repair, the paved path and self-guided tour offered a unique experience to explore the settlement.

The park rangers are located throughout the park and are so very knowledgeable, and I was able to catch one of the guided tours (Free) through the ruins.

The park ranger that guided us through the ruins was incredible and able to answer every question posed to him.

In conclusion, Tuzigoot National Monument is a hidden gem located in between Cottonwood on the way to Jerome.

It is well worth the visit, and each visitor can look through the museum and then walk up to and through the monument.

The monument is an interesting ruin that provides visitors with an opportunity to learn about the early settlers of the region and their way of life.

When visiting Tuzigoot, take the time to read the displays in the museum before going into the ruins, it will give you a much better understanding of what you are looking at.
