10. Obsidian Dome, Mammoth Lakes

Obsidian Dome

Obsidian Dome: A Natural Wonder in Mammoth Lakes, California

Nestled in the heart of the eastern Sierra’s, Obsidian Dome is a must-visit geological attraction in Mammoth Lakes, California.

This mile-long, 300-foot high lava dome was formed less than half a million years ago when magma cooled rapidly, creating a big pile of shiny black volcanic glass.

It’s located about 8 miles north of Mammoth Lakes, just south of June Lake, off Highway 395 via a 2.7-mile dirt road to a free parking lot.

Why You Should Visit Obsidian Dome, Mammoth Lakes:

Obsidian Dome is a fascinating location demonstrating the volcanic power and history.

It is quite rare to find a dome of obsidian like this because the glassy rock is rapidly destroyed or altered by weathering, heat, or other processes.

It was highly prized by prehistoric man all over the world for making sharp tools and arrow points, and here was used/traded by the local Paiutes, pieces being found all over the region.

Since each area of obsidian has its own chemical make-up, archaeologists can trace the origins of a particular artifact relatively easily.

What To Do in Obsidian Dome, Mammoth Lakes:

  • Take the hiking trail to the top of the dome to get an even better view of the geology. You’ll feel like you just dropped into Mordor, and the change is pretty dramatic. Walk along the base of the dome as well and you’ll find car-sized boulders of obsidian.
  • Continue on Glass Flow Road, now due south, around Obsidian Dome to Glass Creek. This is a beautiful hiking area along the south side of the dome. The difference is sort of startling. You’ll go from desolate piles of obsidian to a bubbling creek with wildflowers and pine trees. There are camping areas if you’re so inclined, along the way.
  • Explore the big spectacular blocks of rough black glassy obsidian to see, glistening/shining in the sunlight. Most of the sides of the dome, and particularly the top, are like any other lava plain you may have walked on – very rough, clinker-covered, and sharp.
  • If you are a professional or an amateur geographer/geologist, or a 10-year-old who likes climbing, then getting to the top of the dome is a small challenge in itself. Some families were wandering about. Some folks were scrambling up the side of the dome or around rock formations on top of the dome. There was still some snow so snowballs were flying on occasion.

In conclusion, Obsidian Dome is an amazing geological feature that should not be missed.

The road in is mostly dirt, but most vehicles should be able to handle it easily.

If you love rocks, then this is a very cool place to see!
