2. Koreshan State Park, Estero

Koreshan State Park
Address: 3800 Corkscrew Rd, Estero, FL 33928 Directions

Koreshan State Park: A Fascinating Glimpse Into Old Florida History

As soon as I arrived at Koreshan State Park, I was immediately struck by the lush vegetation and serene atmosphere.

As I explored the park, I discovered that it was much more than just a beautiful nature walk.

The park is home to the historic Koreshan settlement, a utopian community that believed the entire universe existed within a giant, hollow sphere.

One of the highlights of my visit was the guided tour of the Koreshan Unity Settlement Historic District.

Our guide, Chris, did a fantastic job of telling us about the history of the Koreshans and their leader.

We got access to several buildings that are usually locked and learned about the community’s unique lifestyle, beliefs, and practices.

I highly recommend spending the $10 per person on the website to get a guided tour.

I also stayed at the Koreshan campground, which was a great experience overall.

While the sites were a bit small, there was good privacy between neighbors, and the campground is in close proximity to the historic site, kayaking, and hiking.

However, I was surprised to find that there was no information about the invasive plants like the rosary pea, which can be lethal, when we checked in.

So, please be careful with kids and pets!

Apart from the history and camping, there are several other activities to do at Koreshan State Park.

You can rent kayaks and canoes or bring your own and launch them for $4 per boat.

The Estero River crosses right through the park, and it’s perfect for pictures in the water rather than the beach.

The park also hosts a local farmer’s market every Sunday from 9 am to 1 pm, offering fresh fruits, local honey, and delicious foods and drinks.

The park is a true paradise for photographers or anyone looking to have pictures with a beautiful nature background.

I saw many butterflies, birds, and even a tortoise.

There is always the possibility of seeing alligators, but thankfully, we did not encounter any.

Overall, Koreshan State Park is a fascinating state park offering a surprising array of experiences.

It is a place to camp, hike, canoe, kayak, picnic, and explore “weird Florida” history.

The park is open daily from 8 am to sunset, and parking costs $5 per car with 2 to 8 occupants, $4.00 per car with one single occupant, $2.00 per motorcycle, and $2 per pedestrian and cyclists.

The park also offers overnight camping for $29 per night.

I’d recommend this park to anyone, whether you’re interested in learning about the history of Estero and the people that were in charge of the Koreshan, or if you simply enjoy beautiful nature and a good hike.

Next time I go back, I plan to bring my own food and drink for a picnic and explore more of the park’s offerings.

7. Mound Key Archeological State Park, Estero

Mound Key Archeological State Park
Address: Estero, FL 33928 Directions

Mound Key Archeological State Park is a hidden gem in Southwest Gulf Coast, Florida, that I had the pleasure of visiting.

As a traveler with an interest in history, I was fascinated by the Calusa Indians who once called this area their home for over a millennium.

The Calusa were unique among North American Indian tribes, using sea shells for almost every conceivable purpose.

They created their own distinct environment on which to build their structures, and the great mounds like the ones on Pine Island and on Mound Key were deliberately made to create an elevated surface which over hundreds of years grew higher and higher.

If you’re a history buff like me, Mound Key Archeological State Park is a must-visit attraction. Here are some compelling reasons why you should add it to your itinerary:

  • Explore the remnants of an ancient and mostly forgotten kingdom: Mound Key was once the city of Calos, capital of the Calusa nation and home of the cacique or Calusa king. It’s a place of mystery and wonder that allows you to discover a vanished civilization.
  • Learn about the Calusa culture: With a little imagination, it’s possible to recreate in your mind what this place must have been like a thousand years ago. The interpretive panels at the top of the mounds document the history of Mound Key and the Calusa culture.
  • Enjoy a scenic boat ride: The tour is scheduled to run about three hours and is timed to coincide with the highest tides of the month. The cost is $55.00 which includes the $10.00 admission fee to Mound House. The boat is the Estero Bay Express which is a large pontoon boat with a captain and two mates. Also on board was Penny Jarrett, a very experienced guide, knowledgeable not only about the Calusa culture, but also the flora and fauna of SW Florida.

Once you arrive at Mound Key Archeological State Park, there are several must-do activities for visitors:

  • Walk the single file path that leads to the mounds: The trail is muddy in just one place for about twenty feet, but after that it starts the climb up to the first mound. By Florida standards, this is like mountain climbing. At the top, there are several interpretive panels documenting the history of Mound Key.
  • Imagine what life was like for the Calusa: It’s possible to recreate in your mind what this place must have been like a thousand years ago. Take a moment to imagine the native Americans who lived there and their everyday life.
  • Learn about the native trees and shrubs: On the way to the mounds, Penny pointed out some of the native trees and shrubs that the Calusa used to make clothing and medicines including the silk cotton tree.

In conclusion, Mound Key Archeological State Park is a fascinating attraction that offers a glimpse into the past of the Calusa Indians who once called this area their home.

It’s a must-visit for history buffs and anyone with an interest in Florida’s rich cultural heritage.
