3. Lake Placid Historical Society Depot Museum, Lake Placid

Lake Placid Historical Society Depot Museum

Lake Placid Historical Society Depot Museum

As I walked down the alley to take a picture of a mural of a train in Lake Placid, Florida, a docent came out of the depot museum next door and started talking to me about the mural.

He said there were hidden faces and it said HELLO in it.

He had to show me both.

He said they had hidden things in a lot of the murals and I needed a guide that he could sell me.

I decided to take him up on his offer and I’m glad I did.

The museum was completed in 1927 for use by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, and it now houses all kinds of exhibits and artifacts.

As I walked in, I was greeted by a friendly docent who grew up in the area and knew the stories behind the pictures.

His knowledge of the town and sense of humor was the highlight of my visit.

The museum is filled with all kinds of items of Americana, both Lake Placid-specific and USA in general.

There’s even an old switchboard.

The suggested donation was only $2 for a single person and $5 for a family.

The museum is operated by volunteers who are very nice to talk to.

There was a display of arrowheads, shards of clay pots, and rocks that were formed from lightning striking sand.

I learned about the first settlers in the area and saw a model of their house and a large painting of them as well.

The docent also talked to me about Dr.

Dewey of the Dewey Decimal System who had lived there and his many contributions to the area.

The museum also had other random old artifacts from the town.

I recalled seeing something about the Kenilworth Inn in nearby Sebring and wished I had read more about it as I saw it later.

The docent explained caladiums to me, how they’re a plant from Brazil but grow very well here, and they have a caladium festival every year.

He was able to answer all of my questions and we talked about a number of things like bears in the area.

Afterward, I bought the mural guide which was incredibly handy and a good purchase.

It described all of them, and there was a map of all the locations.

I highly recommend stopping here first to get a guide before seeing the murals.
