6. KICCO Wildlife Management Area, Lake Wales

KICCO Wildlife Management Area: A Hidden Gem in Central Florida

Nestled in the heart of Central Florida lies a hidden gem that offers a unique opportunity to explore the natural beauty of the region.

KICCO Wildlife Management Area is a vast expanse of over 7,000 acres that offers a diverse range of habitats, including oak hammocks, scrub, cypress strands, and pine-palmetto flatwoods.

The area is home to an abundance of wildlife, including white-tailed deer, alligators, feral hogs, bald eagles, wild turkeys, hawks, wading birds, and sandhill cranes.

Led by experienced hikers, I set out on a four-and-a-half-mile hike through the woods at KICCO Wildlife Management Area.

The morning dew lit up numerous spider webs as we made our way through the trail.

The hot sun had not yet reached its boiling point, but we were armed with sunscreen and water bottles nonetheless.

We watched for orange trail markings to keep us on the right path, and the threatened crested caracara flew overhead at our turnaround point.

KICCO stands for Kissimmee Island Cattle Company, which operated in the area from 1915 through the late ’20s.

The cattle roamed freely, and their presence seemed appropriate given that the company contributed to the development of central Florida towns such as Kissimmee and Sebring, which depended on beef production and river trade.

The KICCO settlement had homes, a bunkhouse, mess hall, company store, ice house, power plant, schoolhouse, and even its own steamboat landing.

If you prefer a soft road, the 9-mile shell KICCO Grade road offers an excellent biking opportunity atop hybrids and mountain bikes.

Horseback riding, hunting, and camping information is provided at https://my.sfwmd.gov.

Trail users may wish to remember their fishing rod.

Bass lurk in the waters of the C-38 canal and the oxbows of the Old Kissimmee River.

  1. Experience the natural beauty of Central Florida’s diverse habitats, including oak hammocks, scrub, cypress strands, and pine-palmetto flatwoods.
