3. Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, Naples

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary
Address: 375 Sanctuary Rd W, Naples, FL 34120 Directions

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary: A Natural Haven in Southwest Gulf Coast, Florida

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a 13,000-acre nature preserve located in Southwest Gulf Coast, Florida.

As a nature lover, I was thrilled to explore this beautiful sanctuary, which features a 2.5-mile boardwalk loop trail through different Florida habitats.

The sanctuary is also part of the Great Florida Birding Trail, making it a must-visit destination for birdwatchers.

Why You Should Visit Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, Southwest Gulf Coast:

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a place to experience the real Florida.

The sanctuary is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including alligators, anhingas, barred owls, red-shouldered hawks, egrets, herons, spoonbills, limpkins, raccoons, bobcats, turtles, anoles, otters, painted buntings, Carolina wren, warblers, and more.

Visitors can never predict what wildlife they may encounter on their walk.

During the second half of summer and fall, the water levels in the swamp are high, which allows wildlife to spread out over miles across the backcountry.

Therefore, wildlife near the boardwalk may be scarce.

However, the best time to visit is during April and May, when wildlife amass at Lettuce Lake due to “the great dry out.”

What To Do in Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, Southwest Gulf Coast:

  • Take a leisurely walk along the 2.5-mile boardwalk loop trail through different Florida habitats.
  • Visit the lookout tower, which is only accessible via the long loop trail.
  • Look out for wildlife such as alligators, anhingas, barred owls, red-shouldered hawks, egrets, herons, spoonbills, limpkins, raccoons, bobcats, turtles, anoles, otters, painted buntings, Carolina wren, warblers, and more.
  • Wear lightweight long sleeves shirts and long pants to protect yourself from yellow biting flies during April and May.
  • Look out for the rare Ghost Orchid blooms in July or August.
  • Purchase the small pamphlet at the visitors’ entrance, which contains pictures and descriptions of the birds and other wildlife that the guides along the trail didn’t cover.
  • Join the guided educational small group tours, which are available for a higher price. I highly suggest the sunset tour or night walk tour.
  • Watch sunset from the tower and look for alligators and frogs in the dark with a red flashlight.
  • Keep an eye out for Wild Turkeys, Sandhill Cranes, and White-tailed Deer after passing the farm.
  • Bring your binoculars and camera to capture the beauty of the sanctuary.

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a beautiful nature preserve with a winding boardwalk that visitors can explore at their own pace.

The sanctuary is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and birdwatchers alike.

Admission is $17 for adults, $6 for kids ages 6-14, and 5 and under are free.

The sanctuary requires reservations to be made via their website.

Guided educational small group tours are available for a higher price.

Wheelchairs and strollers are allowed on the boardwalk.

The sanctuary is a great place to spend a day out of the sun, and visitors will find that the walk is mostly shady with sunlight coming through the trees.

Please visit and support this beautiful place!
