6. Shipwreck Beach, Poipu

Shipwreck Beach

Shipwreck Beach, Kauai: A Must-Visit Destination for Adventure Seekers

Shipwreck Beach in Kauai, Hawaii, is a famous attraction located near the southernmost tip of the island.

As I drove down Ainako road between the Grand Hyatt and Poipu Golf Course, I couldn’t wait to see what all the fuss was about.

The beach is right next to the Grand Hyatt, making it easily accessible for thousands of hotel guests.

I arrived at the beach at 8:30 am, and the parking lot was empty.

It seemed that all the tourists were still recovering from the previous night’s endless margaritas.

My wife and I decided to use the only restroom on the 3-mile Heritage Trail alongside the lithified sand dunes to the sinkhole before we started our adventure.

The day we visited, the surf was huge, and surfers and boogie boarders were all in the water, catching the large waves.

There were no swimmers or snorkelers, and it was easy to see why the beach is called Shipwreck Beach.

Despite the rough surf, the beach was still beautiful, with lots of trees near the cliff area providing ample shade for picnicking.

We didn’t see any cliff divers, but it was easy to climb up the rocks along the trail to the top of the cliffs.

However, there was no way I was going to dive into that water.

The beach can be dangerous for swimming, and caution is advised.

We decided to take the Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail, starting at Shipwreck Beach, to the Makawehi Bluff to see the Waiopili Heiau Historic Site.

The 6-mile round trip hike was great exercise, and we were rewarded with stunning views of the coast and the ocean.

Along the way, we spotted whales and monk seals, making the hike even more memorable.

Shipwreck Beach is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen.

The water was a bit rough, not great for small kids, but there were lots of teenagers having a great time.

Although there were no food or drink concessions, we brought our own and enjoyed a picnic under the shade of the trees.

The color of the water, even in the waves, was incredible, and we heard the sound of lava rocks rolling in the water as the surf came in and receded.

In conclusion, if you’re an adventure seeker looking for a beautiful beach with big waves and a great hike, Shipwreck Beach in Kauai, Hawaii, is a must-visit destination.

Just be sure to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and your sense of adventure.

McBryde Garden: A Tropical Paradise in Kauai

As I approached the entrance of McBryde Garden, I was immediately struck by the lush greenery and vibrant colors of the surrounding flora.

I couldn’t wait to explore this tropical paradise located in the picturesque Lawai Valley of Kauai, Hawaii.

The shuttle driver dropped me off at the central location, which also serves as a gathering spot to enjoy the orchid garden and the amazing scenery.

Why You Should Visit McBryde Garden, Kauai:

McBryde Garden is home to the largest collection of native Hawaiian flora in the world, many of which are endangered or have gone extinct in the wild.

As a nature lover and photographer, I was captivated by the diverse collection of tropical plants, palms, flowering trees, and ornamental flowers.

The garden is a “botanical ark,” serving as a sanctuary for rare and endangered species.

What To Do in McBryde Garden, Kauai:

During my visit, I toured both of the major gardens with Sam, a knowledgeable guide who has lived on the property for many years.

He shared the history of the land and the significance of the plants, making my experience all the more enriching.

I would definitely recommend taking the “best of both worlds” tour, which includes two of the major gardens.

As I explored the garden at my own pace, I was struck by the beauty of the Canoe Garden, displaying the 30 essential plants the first Polynesian Voyagers carried with them to sustain life in their new world.

The fragrant, narrow, and winding Spice Trail was another highlight of my visit, and I enjoyed it so much that I did it twice.

I finished my visit with the Biodiversity Trail, which left me with a deep appreciation for the beauty of life and a lot of food for thought once I reached its terminus.

The well-reasoned $20 entry fee for adults not only gives you access to the garden but also supports a plethora of conservation, restoration, and research programs, alongside classes, lectures, workshops, and camps for adults and kids alike.

It’s a wonderful way to support and sustain the culture you came here to visit.

In conclusion, McBryde Garden is a must-visit attraction in Kauai for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone who appreciates the beauty of life.

The garden has been painstakingly cared for, for generations, and it shows in every feature of this island, from its plants and animals to its people and history.
