Ka’ena Point State Park: A Paradise for Nature Enthusiasts

As I set foot on Ka’ena Point State Park, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe and wonder.

The park, located at the very end of Mokuleia on Oahu’s North Shore, boasts of secluded sandy coves and huge wide-open spaces that are a haven for nature enthusiasts like me.

Why You Should Visit Ka’ena Point State Park, Oahu:

If you’re a lover of nature, then Ka’ena Point State Park is a must-visit destination on your itinerary.

The park offers a breathtakingly beautiful view of the rocky coastline and the beautiful ocean.

The trail, which is an easy hike, is well-marked and takes you through a dirt road with dozens of small seaward paths branching off to the ocean’s edge.

What To Do in Ka’ena Point State Park, Oahu:

  • Hike along the shore: Take your time and hike along the shore, where you can see turtles and seals basking in the sun. It’s not crowded at all and is like the local hangout.
  • Visit the wildlife sanctuary: At the end of the trail, there is a wildlife sanctuary beyond a gate. Go exploring there, but remember to respect the space of the animals. We encountered a nursing, highly endangered, monk seal!
  • See the albatross nesting area: The nature preserve is home to a multitude of Laysan Albatross that nest here. If you’re lucky, you might even see them doing courtship dances.
  • Watch the whales: Bring your binoculars and scan the ocean for humpbacks, which are commonly seen out here in the proper months.
  • Enjoy the sunset: Pack in dinner for a picnic at the point and watch the beautiful sunset. The hike back at dusk is no problem providing you bring a flashlight.

As I hiked along the trail, I saw many signs posted saying that vehicles and motorcycles aren’t allowed, but we still saw a lot of them on the trail.

I would recommend hiking from the end of North Shore, as it was different and amazing.

I felt safe and I’m a 50-year-old woman who is not in the best of shape.

I got to see seals and turtles both times I hiked.

If I go again, I’d bring my family here.

There were so many private beaches that you’d have all to yourself.

Tips for State of Hawaii – you need bathrooms.

Everyone is having to use the potty the other way, and wow, in some areas, the heat makes you smell it bad.

Glad I wore hiking shoes and brought plenty of water.

I read reviews and am glad I did.

I made sure to have ice-cold water waiting for me inside my car.

In conclusion, Ka’ena Point State Park is a paradise for nature enthusiasts.

With its beautiful scenery, albatross nesting, rocky coastline, and beautiful ocean, it’s a must-visit destination for anyone visiting Oahu.

So, pack your sunscreen, snacks, body cover, and your camera, and get ready for an unforgettable experience.

Pu’U’Ohulu Kai

Pu’U’O’uhulu Kai: A Hiker’s Paradise in Oahu

As I made my way up the winding path of Pu’U’O’uhulu Kai, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation.

This hike, known affectionately as the “pink pillbox hike,” promised to offer breathtaking views and a glimpse into Hawaii’s past.

And let me tell you, it did not disappoint.

Why You Should Visit Pu’U’O’uhulu Kai, Oahu:

First and foremost, the views from the pillboxes are simply amazing.

From the top, I could see sweeping panoramic views of Nanakuli Beach towards Makaha.

The vibrant and beautiful beaches on the West Side of Oahu were even more breathtaking from the top of the mountain.

But the hike itself is also an experience to remember.

While it’s relatively short, it’s definitely not for the faint of heart.

The first half-mile of the trail is a climb over loose gravel, uneven ground, and some large boulders.

The remaining trail is a series of switchbacks on narrow paths with more loose rocks.

Overall, the hike up Pu’U’O’uhulu Kai was a highlight of my trip to Oahu.

While it was challenging, the views and sense of accomplishment made it all worth it.

I highly recommend this hike to any adventurous travelers visiting the West Side of Oahu.
