Kansas State Capitol Building: A Must-Visit Attraction in Topeka

As I walked up to the Kansas State Capitol Building, I was immediately struck by its grandeur.

The limestone foundation was impressive, and the rotunda was breathtakingly beautiful.

The Kansas state building has something that you might not see anywhere else: an outside dome beyond the inside dome.

I was excited to explore this attraction and learn more about its history.

Why You Should Visit Kansas State Capitol Building, Topeka:

The Kansas State Capitol Building is a must-visit attraction in Topeka.

Built in 1866, the Capitol building contains magnificent artwork, including murals by native-born artist John Steuart Curry, ornate architectural features, and elaborate Senate and House Chambers.

The building’s great history is evident in every corner, making it an ideal place to learn about Kansas’s past.

What To Do in Kansas State Capitol Building, Topeka:

There are several tours available at the Kansas State Capitol Building.

The Visitor Center is the starting point of the tours.

The most elaborate and challenging tour is the Dome Tour.

This includes climbing stairs to the top of the dome.

These stairs are narrow and steep, and it is a challenge to complete this tour.

However, the view from the top is worth the climb.

The second tour excludes the dome tour and walks through the first five floors of the Capitol Building.

This tour is less challenging but still provides a great history lesson.

The last tour is the self-guided tour, which allows visitors to roam freely throughout the building.

Surprisingly, the self-guided tour allowed us to roam, at our leisure throughout the building.

We sat in the Senate and House Chambers and observed the murals and exhibits on the first five floors.

Being that the legislature was not in session, we were probably allowed this access to the building.

The ground floor was impressive.

The large stones of the foundation, of the Capitol, are clearly visible.

The architecture of the building is impressive.

I took the historical tour and the tour that allows access to the outer dome.

The outer dome tour is 260 winding, narrow steps with no air conditioning, but again, unsure you’ll see anything else like it.

The tour guide was knowledgeable and nice, and she encouraged us to stop and rest and to go at our own pace on the steps up.

There are many cool artifacts concerning Kansas.

Some beautiful murals and statues.

You can see the house and senate chambers.

People are essentially allowed to roam the building freely, at least when congress isn’t in session.

In conclusion, the Kansas State Capitol Building is a must-visit attraction in Topeka, Kansas.

The building’s history and architecture are impressive, and the tours provide a great learning experience.

Whether you choose to climb to the top of the dome or take a self-guided tour, you won’t be disappointed.

Reviews from visitors to Ted Ensley Gardens rave about the well-maintained gardens and the stunning views of Lake Shawnee.

The gardens are a popular spot for wedding photos and family portraits, and the paved walkways make it accessible for visitors of all ages and abilities.

While the gardens are especially vibrant during tulip season, the trails, bridges, falls, and landscaping are impressive year-round.

One downside, as mentioned in a review, is the number of people climbing into the flower beds for photos.

Despite this, Ted Ensley Gardens remains a tranquil oasis in Topeka that is definitely worth a visit.

Norsemen Brewing Company: A Viking-Themed Brewery in Topeka, KS

When I first heard about Norsemen Brewing Company, I was immediately intrigued.

As someone who loves both beer and Scandinavian culture, I knew I had to check it out.

Upon arriving, I was impressed by the spacious interior, which can accommodate both groups and families.

The street parking was free and easy to find on a Saturday night, which was a pleasant surprise.

The brewery offers about 8 beers on tap, with most of them being small batch and constantly changing.

The manager informed me that they have 3 beers that they keep year-round.

While I wasn’t looking for food, most of the patrons were eating, and the menu looked quite interesting.

What I really appreciated about this place was the bar manager, who recommended other breweries in the area that we should visit.

I love the idea that places like this are willing to spread the love and recommend other establishments.

If you can’t stay for long, Norsemen Brewing Company offers growlers and crowlers to go.

Truckhenge: A Quirky Artistic Wonderland in Topeka

Truckhenge is one of the most unique and eccentric attractions located in Topeka, Kansas.

As I drove down the road, I couldn’t help but notice the junkyards and scrapyards that surrounded the area.

However, Truckhenge was the last place on the road, and it was unlike anything I had ever seen before.

Why You Should Visit Truckhenge, Topeka:

As I parked my car, I was greeted by Ron and his wife Linda, the owners of Truckhenge.

They welcomed me with open arms and a great sense of humor.

Ron is a genuine quirky outsider artist who is full of stories and funny asides.

He walked me through his property, showing me his chainsaw carvings, trucks upended in the ground, a row of graffiti painted upended boats, his shoe tree, and his incredible Quonset adapted home.

What To Do in Truckhenge, Topeka:

  • Take a guided tour with Ron, the owner, and artist, who will tell you the story of how he continuously fought the county to display his public art.
  • Admire the gorgeous junkyard art and the psychedelic busses that are scattered throughout the area.
  • Check out the painted floors, indoor garden, hand-made cage elevator, and art painted with household paint on to large hung bedsheets inside Ron’s Quonset adapted home.
  • Visit Beer Bottle City, Ron’s little creation to accompany the world’s largest ball of Christmas lights.
  • Enjoy the surrealist painting-like atmosphere where nature, psychedelic busses, and peacocks run wild.

Truckhenge is a mad jumble from inside someone’s head laid out in a playful mess of fun and creativity.

It’s proper American eccentricity that’s a treat for those who are open to that kind of thing.

Although it’s not very well-kept, it’s worth a visit for those who love rebel art and a great story.

There is no cost, but donations are appreciated.

So, if you’re ever in Topeka, be sure to add Truckhenge to your itinerary and experience this quirky artistic wonderland for yourself.
