Richardson Olmsted Campus, Buffalo

As I walked up to the Richardson Olmsted Campus, I was awestruck by the sheer size and beauty of the building.

The red stone exterior, which was moved all the way from Medina in the mid-1800s, made an impressive statement of days gone by.

I was excited to explore this iconic building and learn more about its history.

Why You Should Visit Richardson Olmsted Campus, Buffalo

If you are a fan of amazing architecture, then the Richardson Olmsted Campus is a must-visit attraction in Buffalo.

Designed by great American architect Henry Hobson Richardson and the famed landscape team of Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, the building incorporated a system of enlightened treatment for people with mental illness developed by Dr. Thomas Story Kirkbride.

Today, the Richardson Olmsted Campus is home to one of the largest historic preservation projects in the nation.

Since 2006, the nonprofit Richardson has been hard at work bringing the site back to life after decades of neglect.

What To Do in Richardson Olmsted Campus, Buffalo

  • Take a patient life tour: The patient life tour is a must-do activity for visitors. The guide was very knowledgeable, and we got to go into more buildings than I expected. I really enjoyed when the guide held up old photos of the locations where we were actually standing, and we could compare. Looks much the same. The preservation is fantastic.
  • Photography tour: If you like taking pictures of dilapidated buildings, this tour is for you. If you like photographing unusual spaces (Victorian-era mental hospital), this tour is also for you. This tour is probably not for you if you don’t like dirty, messy places or having to take the stairs everywhere (no functioning elevators).
  • In-depth tour: My friend and I opted for the 2-hour in-depth tour, and it was really worth it. We were able to go up into the attic and down into the basement. I would not recommend this tour for young children. The tour guides were very knowledgeable. The buildings are 99% not completely renovated. They have a long, long way to go. The 1% that was renovated was awesome with the detailed woodwork, the 16-foot ceilings, and the refinished hardwood floors.
  • Look around: This complex of buildings is such a cool building inside and out. It’s not really what you would expect inside, but it’s very neat. There’s also a restaurant/bar which is nice. We’ve also been to weddings there. I know there are several tours as well, but we haven’t done those.

In conclusion, the Richardson Olmsted Campus is an iconic building that is worth a visit if you are a fan of amazing architecture, tours, and history.

The patient life tour, photography tour, and in-depth tour are must-do activities for visitors.

The preservation of this historic landmark is fantastic, and the nonprofit Richardson has been hard at work bringing the site back to life after decades of neglect.

21. Guaranty Building, Buffalo

Guaranty Building

Guaranty Building: A Masterpiece of Design and Craftsmanship

As I approached the Guaranty Building in downtown Buffalo, I was struck by its beauty.

The red terra cotta details on the exterior of the building were unlike anything I had ever seen before.

Designed by Louis C. Sullivan and built in 1904, this skyscraper was a modern marvel for its time.

Unfortunately, when I arrived on a Sunday, the doors were locked, and I was informed by the security guard that the building was now restricted to those arriving to do business.

However, I pleaded my case and was allowed to admire the floors, walls, ceiling, and elevators.

The interior mosaics on the ceiling were individually hand-set, and the attention to detail was exquisite.

Thankfully, the Guaranty Building has been renovated and restored to its former glory.

The law firm of HodgsonRuss Attorneys purchased the entire building in 1998 and did restoration work in 2006.

The building is now open to the public on Wednesday evenings for tours.

For any architecture or history buff, the Guaranty Building is a must-see attraction.

The exterior terra cotta designs and interior details showcase Sullivan’s Celtic roots and his mastery of ornamentation.

The building is a masterpiece of design and craftsmanship.

When I visited, the security guards welcomed me and even pointed me to a brochure on the building that I could take with me.

They also allowed me to take all the pictures I wanted in the first-floor public areas.

The upper floors are off-limits, but the guards understand the significance of the building and welcome architecture buffs.

After admiring the lobby, I walked around the outside of the building, getting up close to touch and see the terra cotta details.

I also crossed the street to view the building from a distance, and it was even more impressive from afar.

If you’re planning a visit to the Guaranty Building, be sure to also check out the nearby Ellicot Square Building by Daniel Burnham from 1896.

It has a stunning atrium with a beautiful mosaic tile floor.

Parking is limited, so it’s best to find a garage.

But trust me, it’s worth the effort to see this architectural masterpiece in person.

My pictures don’t do it justice – you have to experience it for yourself.
