What To Do in Cumming Nature Center, Finger Lakes

  • Take a hike through the sprawling series of trails through woods, tree strands, featuring a smaller and a larger lake area, the latter with great views.
  • Experience the maple sugar weekends in late March when they are actively harvesting the maple sap from the local sugar maple trees and boiling it down into syrup. It is a fun, beautiful, and educational way to spend part of a weekend day that you’d normally use to sit in front of the television set.
  • Enjoy a sit-down breakfast of three pancakes with REAL maple syrup, accompanied by sausage and your choice of beverage. And please, try the real maple syrup, especially if you have not done so before. It tastes 100 times better than the fake corn syrup junk you buy in the store.
  • Walk out the back of the visitor’s center and onto the trails, which wind amongst the sugar maple trees in route to the sugar shack. Along the way, volunteers have set up displays that explain the entire process, from drilling into the tree and collecting sap to the extensive process of boiling down the sap to produce the syrup, (it takes 55 gallons of sap to make one gallon of maple syrup!) And, of course, they have more samples of syrup waiting for you to “sup” back in the sugar shack.
  • Enroll your children in various summer programs, including bussing from Rochester, NY.
  • Trails are open for cross country skiing and snowshoeing during January, February, and March. (Skies and snowshoes are available for rent.) These trails are monitored by Ski Patrols who are very eager to offer help.

I tried their signature cocktail, Vote for Pedro, which had tequila and jalapeño syrup that was not overwhelming.

The homemade sangria was also amazing.

The poutine burger was worth the extra workout in the morning, and the Cubans were so big that my husband had to take the second half home.

We also tried the dessert special, a Chai Tea crème brûlée, which was delicious, and everyone at the table sampled it.
