Century Village Museum: A Journey into Ohio’s Past

Welcome to Century Village Museum, a place where the past comes to life.

As I walked through the outdoor “town” of structures, I felt like I had stepped back in time to the settlement and early years of the area.

The wooden church, in particular, caught my attention as it was actually used in the 1800s and relocated here for preservation.

It was amazing to walk into a piece of history and experience the past in such a tangible way.

Why You Should Visit Century Village Museum, Burton:

Century Village Museum is not your typical museum.

It’s an outdoor village that brings history to life.

The admission fee goes directly to their non-profit cause, so you can feel good about supporting a great cause while enjoying a day of entertainment.

There are lots of events throughout the year, including the popular pancake breakfast in maple syrup season and the civil war era reenactment.

You can also check out the historical machinery, which features some of the first tractors and farm equipment used long ago.

What To Do in Century Village Museum, Burton:

  • Take a tour of the restored buildings: Spend a full 2-3 hours touring the General Store, Apothecary, One-room Schoolhouse, and homes from 1798 to the end of the 19th century. All exhibits are authentic and from this era, and you will be impressed with the tools, medical treatments, and medicines of the past.
  • Check out the rifles exhibit: There is an incredible exhibit of rifles from Flint-locks used in the revolutionary war to WW1. It’s amazing to imagine using a 1 bullet flint-lock on a charging grizzly bear!
  • Visit during the Apple Butter Festival: The entire Village is open during this festival, and docents are stationed at each of the historical buildings to answer questions and provide background information. Don’t miss the locally produced maple syrup and sugar candy, especially the maple creme.

Located in the heart of Burton Township in Geauga County, Century Village Museum is a gem in such a small township.

Spend your day appreciating the history of our ancestors in this wild country of the past.

You will not be disappointed.

Eldon Russell Park: A Hidden Gem in Burton, Ohio

Nestled in the heart of Troy Township, Eldon Russell Park is a hidden gem that offers visitors a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.

As a lover of nature, I was immediately drawn to this park’s rustic charm and picturesque scenery.

Managed by the Geauga park system, Eldon Russell Park spans 132 acres along the west branch of the Cuyahoga River.

The river may not be as wide or deep as other rivers, but it is clean and teeming with wildlife.

During my visit, I saw visitors fishing and enjoying a lazy afternoon by the river.

One of the park’s highlights is the mile-long walk along the river, which takes you through the woods and down the bed of the former interurban electric railway.

The walk is rustic, but fairly level, making it accessible for all visitors.

There is also a picnic pavilion, making it a great spot for a family outing.

Eldon Russell Park has two important historical connections.

First, it was the site of the so-called onion wars in 1901 when a developer attempted to straighten out the river and blow up a local dam to start large-scale onion farming.

Second, for about 15 years, the interurban electric railway ran along this path, taking visitors from Cleveland to this area of rural beauty.

The park is well-maintained, and during my visit, I noticed newer latrine-style restrooms.

However, there is no running water, as the park is not in an area with municipal water.

If you plan to visit during summer or early fall, don’t forget to bring insect repellent as mosquitoes are inevitable near bodies of water.

In conclusion, if you’re looking for a rural getaway, a pleasant walk, or a place with some local history, Eldon Russell Park is a great choice.

Don’t be fooled by the park’s small size; it offers visitors a chance to connect with nature and learn about the area’s rich history.
