As I stepped into the Reading Public Museum, I was greeted by the sight of the Alfonse Mucha exhibit.

Nolde Forest Environmental Education Center: A Hidden Gem in Reading, Pennsylvania

Nolde Forest Environmental Education Center is a hidden gem that we stumbled upon during our search for a peaceful, outdoorsy day trip.

Located in Reading, Pennsylvania, this state forest may be the smallest in the state, but it packs a punch with its 11+ miles of trails that offer a variety of hikes ranging from 1-4 miles.

Why You Should Visit Nolde Forest Environmental Education Center, Reading:

There are many reasons to add Nolde Forest Environmental Education Center to your itinerary.

Here are a few:

  • History: The old stone mansion, which now serves as the park offices, is a cool attraction. Markers around the mansion share old photos and the interesting history of the building and property when it was the Nolde family estate.
  • Nature Programs: The newer environmental center near the parking area offers a good slate of nature programs for the public, especially for kids.
  • Wildlife: Although there’s not an abundance of obvious wildlife here, birders seem to frequent the forest during migratory seasons. You may spot deer, a couple of pileated woodpeckers, and the occasional squirrel trying to stay from the occasional hawk. The keen-eyed may also find fingerling trout in the stream.
  • Peaceful and Relaxing: It’s not far from civilization, but it definitely feels like you took a step away from the world here. The forest smells like a beautiful forest, and it is…it just hits you. And it’s relaxing. Your cell phone won’t even work.

What To Do in Nolde Forest Environmental Education Center, Reading:

Here are some must-do activities for visitors:

  • Hiking: With over 10 miles of trails, hiking is a must-do activity. The Watershed Trail and Boulevard are the most popular paths, both well-groomed and easily accessed from the main Sawmill and Mansion parking lots off Rte. 625. The highest points in the park proper are along the Boulevard loop, but the thick woods make good views scant, especially during the summer. You can get a glimpse through the trees from the rock outcrop at the far end of the loop, and a clean shot down the arrow-straight swath recently cleared over the pipeline that cuts through the park, but that’s about it.
  • History Tour: Take a tour of the old stone mansion to learn about the history of the Nolde family estate and the property.
  • Nature Programs: Attend one of the many nature programs offered at the newer environmental center near the parking area.
  • Picnicking: Pack a small backpack with water and snacks and enjoy a picnic at one of the many picnic tables near the mansion parking lot or the ones near the sawmill parking lot.
  • Wildlife Watching: Keep an eye out for deer, woodpeckers, squirrels, and fingerling trout in the stream.

In conclusion, Nolde Forest Environmental Education Center is a hidden gem that offers a peaceful and relaxing day trip for nature lovers.

With over 10 miles of trails, history tours, and nature programs, Nolde Forest Environmental Education Center is a must-visit attraction in Reading, Pennsylvania.
