Robert Mills House & Gardens: A Stately Home in the Heart of Columbia

As I walked through the grand entryway of the Robert Mills House & Gardens, I was transported back in time to the era of the slave-holding elite in South Carolina. The immaculate site was reflective of a stately home with period furniture, and the history behind the house was extremely interesting. It was somewhat deceiving to see an old mansion situated right downtown, but the tour I took on the hour was well worth the $12 for two people.

Why You Should Visit Robert Mills House & Gardens, Columbia:

If you are visiting or living in Columbia, SC, you’ve got to get some of this random history. The Robert Mills House & Gardens is one of only five National Historic Landmarks within Columbia, and it exemplifies the skill of the first architect born and trained within the United States. Robert Mills designed some of the nation’s most prominent buildings, including the Washington Monument. Today, the structure stands as a testament to its designer’s architectural ability and the preservation efforts of generations of Columbians.

What To Do in Robert Mills House & Gardens, Columbia:

  • Take the organized tour and learn about the old south
  • Admire the fine collection of furnishings and portraits from the Historic Columbia Foundation
  • Combine your visit with other nearby sites
  • Visit the excellent gift shop with books on local history

The Robert Mills House & Gardens is right off Main Street, about three blocks away. The house complex housed a Presbyterian College for most of its life, but was nearly torn down in the 1960s. The Columbia Historic Society was formed to save and restore it, and it is now the headquarters of the Society which operates four historic house museums in the city.

As a lover of historic houses, Robert Mills is one of my favorite architects from that period, and I was thrilled to finally visit this site after knowing about it for 30 years.

The lecture we had last time was very informative, and the site was immaculate and definitely reflective of a stately home with period furniture.

I highly recommend taking the tour and learning about the old south.
