5. Mount Ascutney, Windsor

Mount Ascutney

Mount Ascutney: A Rewarding Hike with Spectacular Views

As I stood at the base of Mount Ascutney, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation.

I had heard so much about this mountain, and I was eager to experience it for myself.

As I began my ascent, I quickly realized that this was going to be a challenging hike, but one that was definitely worth taking.

Located in Windsor, Vermont, Mount Ascutney is a lovely little hill that provides some relief to the valleys surrounding it.

The drive up to the mountain is said to be tough on vehicles, but I decided to take the Weathersfield Trail up to the summit instead.

The trail is 2.9 miles long and has an elevation gain of about 2500 feet.

The final 1.8 miles of the trail is steep, with a few flat spots to catch your breath.

It took me about 2.5 hours to reach the summit, with stops at the two waterfalls and Gus’s Lookout along the way.

The view from the observation tower at the summit was simply spectacular.

I could see the Green and White Mountains, and the view made the tough hike up worthwhile.

The hike down was much quicker and easier, taking just around 1.5 hours to get back to the bottom.

If you’re planning a trip to New England, you should definitely add Mount Ascutney to your itinerary.

The Weathersfield Trail is a wonderful day hike with lots to see.

You’ll come across multiple rushing streams, waterfalls, and spectacular views that make the hike all the more worthwhile.

The best waterfalls on the trail are all in the first 45 minutes of the hike, but the ultimate prize is reaching Gus’s Lookout and then ultimately climbing the tower at the summit.

Maps on the summit help identify the many mountain peaks and ski areas you can see.

While the entire trail might be a little strenuous for young children, it’s great for older children and everyone else.

I’ve done all three over the years and it’s a good workout hiking.

The paved road was always deserted as we climbed it in November.

The trail is a more direct, steeper climb, and driving is the most boring!

In conclusion, Mount Ascutney is a rewarding hike with spectacular views.

Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just starting out, this mountain is definitely worth a visit.

So, pack your bags, grab your hiking boots, and head to Windsor, Vermont to experience the beauty of Mount Ascutney for yourself.
