Presquile National Wildlife Refuge: A Hidden Island Gem

As a traveler seeking a unique eco-adventure, Presquile National Wildlife Refuge in Chester, Virginia, exceeded my expectations.

This isolated island located in the James River is only accessible by pontoon and pre-arranged permit, making it a true hidden gem.

The island’s 3 miles of easy trails offer the perfect opportunity for photography and flora and fauna observation.

Why You Should Visit Presquile National Wildlife Refuge, Chester:

Presquile National Wildlife Refuge is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts seeking a peaceful and secluded getaway.

The island’s wetlands, forests, and grasslands are home to hundreds of native plant and animal species, making it an important bird area providing habitat value to an unusually large number of bird species.

Along the forested shorelines, visitors can enjoy watching eagles, osprey, herons, and cormorants.

The island provides protected breeding habitat for state-listed threatened and endangered species, as well as many neotropical migrating bird species.

What To Do in Presquile National Wildlife Refuge, Chester:

  • Hike 3 miles of easy trails for photography and flora and fauna observation.
  • Bring binoculars, a good camera, and dress appropriately for the weather.
  • Visit the James River Ecology School for hands-on ecology lessons and canoe/kayak water trails.
  • Attend the special public events in September to go wild for wildlife.
  • Stay in a LEED certified bunkhouse powered by solar panels, rainwater collected for outdoor showers, compostable toilets conserve water, and a special rain garden that filters grey water into the ground.

During my visit in July, the temperatures hit 100 degrees plus, so I recommend bringing plenty of water to stay hydrated.

It’s slightly damp due to the swamp habitat, so sneakers or closed-toe walking shoes are recommended.

Bug repellent, sunscreen, and a hat are also nice to remember.

During our hike, we ran across turtles, skinks, snakes, and zillions of colorful dragonflies, butterflies, and other insects.

We heard owls, the pileated woodpecker, and the Prothonotary warbler but without binoculars, we didn’t catch a glimpse.

The island’s flora is just as impressive as its fauna.

We saw blackberry brambles peeking out along the grasslands trail, and these cheery bright yellow flowers brightened the path.

We also saw lime-like fruit, which turned out to be a rare find.

The star of the floral show in the 100+ heat was the statuesque Hibiscus moscheutos, common names include swamp rose-mallow, or marsh mallow hibiscus.

Growing 3-8′ tall, huge 4-5″ white flowers with a dramatic crimson red eye bloom from July to September!

While marsh mallow love swampy forests, wet meadows, and marshes, they will grow in your garden too if you have a most or wet spot or bog garden.

This impressive VA native will attract hummingbirds too.

In conclusion, Presquile National Wildlife Refuge is a hidden island gem that is perfect for nature enthusiasts seeking a peaceful and secluded getaway.

The island’s wetlands, forests, and grasslands are home to hundreds of native plant and animal species, making it an important bird area providing habitat value to an unusually large number of bird species.

So, do not miss the opportunity to visit this beautiful island, and experience nature at its best.
