National Historic Cheesemaking Center: A Journey Through Wisconsin’s Cheese Heritage

As a lover of cheese, I was thrilled to discover the National Historic Cheesemaking Center in Monroe, Wisconsin.

From the moment I arrived, I knew I was in for a treat.

The museum is housed in the former Monroe Train Station, which has been beautifully restored to showcase the history of cheese making in the area.

The tour began with a well-produced video that provided an overview of the museum and its collection of antique tools of the trade.

But the highlight of the tour was the visit to the Imobersteg Farmstead Cheese Factory, which was donated to the museum and fully restored to its original glory.

Here, we were walked through the ancestral process of making the cheeses that made Wisconsin famous.

It was a trip back in time, and I felt like I had stepped into a bygone era.

Our volunteer guide, Mary Ann, was a former director of the facility and her passion for cheese making was contagious.

She explained the process of making cheese back in the day and the interesting collection of antique tools of the trade.

Her knowledge and enthusiasm made the tour even more enjoyable.

After the tour, we explored the historic Monroe downtown shops and had lunch at Baumgartner’s Cheese Store & Tavern. The food was delicious, and the ice-cold draft root beer and Spotted Cow beer from the nearby New Glarus Brewing Company were the perfect accompaniments to our salami and Swiss sandwiches, chili, and brat.

The volunteers and staff at the National Historic Cheesemaking Center are passionate about their cheese and the history of cheese making in the area.

The museum is open from May to October and is the only National Historic Cheesemaking Center Museum in the United States.

It’s a one-of-a-kind experience that I highly recommend to anyone visiting the area.

18. Roth Kase Cheese Factory, Monroe

Roth Kase Cheese Factory

Address: 1325 6th Ave, Monroe, WI 53566, United States

Google Maps: DIRECTIONS

Opening Hours: 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM (Monday-Friday)

Roth Kase Cheese Factory, nestled in the picturesque town of Monroe, Wisconsin, is a must-visit destination for cheese lovers.

As I walked into the Alp and Dell Store, I was greeted by an energetic and friendly gentleman with a distinct Swiss accent and mustache.

The store’s chalet facade and vast selection of cheeses made me feel like I was in the Swiss Alps.

After sampling and purchasing some cheese, I joined the only tour of the day, which started at 10:00 am.

The tour was more of a seminar, and I learned things about cheese-making that I never knew before.

The tour guide, who was also from Switzerland, was a master of his craft and answered every question thrown at him.

He explained the old way and the way milk is brought into the factory now, what they do to the milk once received, and how it becomes cheese.

I was fascinated by what they did with the whey, a by-product of cheese-making, which is now a very lucrative business.

Next, we were taken to the curing, aging, and packaging part of the plant, where we observed the cheese being bathed in salt brine, leveled, and packaged.

The tour was informative, and the absolute best part was that it was free.

After the tour, I went back into the store, and I was glad that I had purchased my cheese beforehand.

The store was crowded with a tour bus that had pulled up while we were on our tour.

The store had an incredible assortment of top-quality cheeses, including cheddars aged anywhere from a few months to 12 years.

They were happy to let me sample them, and I was blown away by the flavors.

In addition to cheese, the store had a nice variety of Swiss products, great wines, chocolates, and souvenirs.

They even had samples of wine on Saturdays.

The prices were reasonable, and I ended up purchasing more cheese to take home.

I highly recommend adding Roth Kase Cheese Factory to your itinerary if you’re in the area.

The tour is only available at 10:00 am Monday through Friday and 11:00 am on Saturday, so make sure to plan accordingly.
